Protection of air: Emissions monitoring and reduction
Halyps Cement invested in a fully automatic feeding for its cement mill No7 obtaining the following environmental improvements :
- reduction of fugitive dust by 550 tons / year
- cancellation of 5000 truck rotations (saving of gas oil consumption estimated at 10.000 liters)
That investment included also a new antiwear casing for the clinker elevator and a complete revamping of the line filters.
In addition a new hopper for dusty materials unloading has been installed for raw materials feeding at the raw mill.
Halyps Cement has been the first cement plant in Greece in installing a continuous monitoring system for its emissions (CEM) based in the latest technology from ABB (Asea Brown Boveri) company.
Rational use of alternative raw materials and fuel
Halyps Cement concluded a pioneer agreement in 2004 with the Hellenic Ministry for Environment, the National Technical University of Athens and a local waste management company to implement a 4-year pilot program for various wastes usage and recycling in the plant’s clinker and cement production, establishing thus a rigorous policy for the use of alternative raw materials and fuel.
Thanks to this approach, Halyps Cement recycled in the industrial process in the last years 235.000 tons of waste (of alternative raw materials) of other industrial activities avoiding thus storage of such quantities in open landfills causing air, soil and subsoil pollution.
Climate protection: CO2 emissions
Halyps Cement stabilized in 2004 the lowest CO2 emission in the Greek market at less than 650 kg CO2 /ton of produced cement.
Halyps plant investment in the replacement of the twin cyclones in the clinker production line led to thermal consumption saving equivalent to CO2 emissions cut of 1200 tons annually.
Protection of soil
In spite it was not part of the restoration plan committed with the relevant Greek authorities, Halyps Quarries has performed in 2004 the plantation of 3500 trees in the peripherical areas of its exploitation. That trees plantation has been performed in addition to the on going restoration plan approved by the relevant administrations. That plantation policy which will be continued in the next years has concerned in 2004 a total superficy of 3,5 Ha.
