Inauguration Ceremony of New Silos for Raw Materials and Combustibles

27 November 2013

On Wednesday 27th November our company inaugurated a new installation consisted of 5 brand new silos for raw materials and combustibles. The event was realized at the presence of high governmental authorities and with the participation of Italcementi Group’s top management as well as of employees of all activities of the Group in Greece.
The main event was preceded by a symbolic planting of 5 olive trees by our Group’s CEO Ing. Carlo Pesenti together with Halyps Cement Managing Director Mr. Serge Schmidt, accompanied by representatives of both Italcementi Group and Halyps Cement management. Each olive tree symbolizes one silo and at the same time Italcementi Group’s commitment towards sustainability, growth and roots to the future.
Halyps Cement has invested more than 13 million Euros to complete the project. This investment put into practice our fundamental policy for the protection of the environment and the health of local community, consistently with our commitment towards sustainable development.  The main objective of the project is to create an isolated storage area, which would not only improve the production process but also eliminate dust dispersion, gases emissions and avoid groundwater contamination.
The project started in November 2011 and was finalized in the mid of September 2013 with the cooperation of more than 10 technical companies, operating under the most effective safety standards.  Each of these sealed silos is 46 m high with a diameter of 14 m and 3.500 m3 capacity and accommodates materials such as pet coke, gypsum, perlite, coarse gravel and limestone. The whole construction is based on a concrete foundation platform which is anchored at 45 m under the sea level. Pioneer methods and materials were used for the construction, such as a system of slipping formwork and concrete.
Despite the difficult economic scenario, Halyps Cement and Italcementi Group completed a project that underlines the Group’s strong commitment to make its Greek operations more efficient and represents a further step towards sustainability as it will significantly improve the plant’s environmental performance in accordance with the company’s strategic industrial plan.
